Title: Squatters rights
Comments: It was very wrong of the politicians here to send a team of policemen and soldiers to destroy the homes of some of our citizens at Pine Avenue in Valencia without giving the tenants any notice or checking whether they had any rights to the occupation of this land. According to the rules pertaining to squatters rights in this country, squatters have the legal right to the possession of any land or building provided they could established they occupied the said land or property for 16 years or more. It would appear that a great injustice has be done in respect of this incident and the innocent victims should now be compensated. Those who were evicted, and can prove they had the legal right to possession of the land and buildings should be immediately rehoused especially for the sake of the children involved, and thus prevent creating a state of more homelessness. Particularly bearing in mind, the legal aspect of local squatters rights,as per the constitution.
Squatting in Trinidad and Tobago has messed up a lot of the infrastructure, layout and scenic views. It is so bad that you will often see a squatter house that looks like a shack next to one that is rather affluent where the person has to struggle to pay a mortgage. It is grossly unfair that the government simply allows people to take land simply because they lived there for a long time. They should acquire it by legal means as everyone else.
