USA 911 A Risk Factor

FAMILY DISTURBED BY 911 INCIDENT

A very ill Scott Aston sat on the floor of his new apartment, a cell phone in his hand. He had started furnishing the apartment for the approaching day his Dominican wife would become a permanent U.S. Citizen. On that day, however, the 30-year-old's future was in jeopardy.

This story is really sad. A cell phone that I used to use had a GPS module in it, so that a call to 911 would be able to show where I was located. But it sounds as if this feature isn't even available in Provo.

Dispatchers are only human, but it sure sounds as if a lot of mistakes were made in this case.

Wow, this is so sad. It makes me angry that nobody informed his relatives about this call to 911 and I cannot understand how the system cannot trace a location. I thought this should be a basic service of 911. Obviously I was wrong.

Well, with a landline they can trace the call, and figure out where it is coming from. But due to the nature of cell phones, you can call from anywhere, so there's no way of knowing where someone is calling from.

But yes, that is very sad. I used to live right by him actually. Kind of frightening.

Congress alarmed by plans to use Russian system to route 911 calls:

Family sues over Pa. Dad's unheeded 911 calls

This story broke my heart. What kind of people work in the system? Absolutely insanity!

international QUOTE
PITTSBURGH — The children of a man who died after waiting 30 hours for help despite 10 calls to 911 during a record-setting February snowstorm are suing, saying his death happened because of a total breakdown of the emergency medical system. The lawsuit filed Thursday claims the city, the county dispatch center and the various paramedics and emergency medical services brass are responsible for the Feb. 7 death of Curtis Mitchell, 50. Mitchell died at home after ambulance crews didn't reach him despite calls his live-in girlfriend, Sharon Edge, made to 911 as a storm dumped nearly two feet of snow on the city. One paramedic was fired, and three others were suspended over Mitchell's death. The lawsuit claims he endured agonizing stomach pain while waiting for help. Source 1r
