CDC confirms link between Zika and birth defects in Brazilian babies

The Centers for Disease Control has identified the Zika virus in the tissue of two babies who died in Brazil from microcephaly - the strongest link yet between the virus and the birth defect that has stricken developing fetuses, CDC Director Tom Frieden told a House panel Wednesday. The CDC is warning pregnant women to protect their babies by avoiding travel to South America, Central America and the Caribbean, where the virus is spreading the fastest. The virus is not a major threat to the rest of the population. Ref. USAToday.

Six months before the Rio Olympics, World Health Organization director general Margaret Chan has called for a worldwide "Attack" on Zika. The mosquito-borne virus has been linked to microcephaly, a neurological disorder that results in newborns having abnormally small heads and suffering from seizures and impaired brain development. Zika virus linked to stillbirth, other symptoms in Brazil

In January, a pregnant Brazilian woman infected with the Zika virus had a stillborn baby who had signs of severe tissue swelling as well as central nervous system defects that caused near-complete loss of brain tissue. It is the first report to indicate a possible association of congenital Zika virus and damage to tissues outside the central nervous system, say researchers. Ref. Source 5z.

I feel really sorry for the mothers in Brazil because this will affect them terribly more so the ones in the very poor areas where mosquitoes are allowed to breed freely. What I am concerned about is all the foreigners going there for the Olympics and then taking Zika from there back to their own countries.
