And The Storyteller says... So ICon was there anything in particular you had planned for the owl, or could you offer its purpose? I am willing to see it incorporated.
Also, I sent JB an email for some simple Ship Combat Rules I found that I would like to use. Once they are added to the SRD or as a separate link you can look over them and we can begin using them, it takes up a single page.

And Unmarked says... He is my familiar, spell repository, mentor, and guardian all rolled together. Zero tried to slink away but didn't quite manage. Unless Zero gets badly injured the owl will probably stay out of combat just to teach him a lesson.
