The two would move on ahead, making their way towards the multigrade school. It wouldn't be too hard to find, especially for those who live in Canterlot or have stayed there many times. It helped that it was among the largest complexes within the city, with its main building rivaled only by the royal castle and main temple to the Celestial Sisters since to covered ages from youth to adulthood. Even for those that didn't know, asking directions would be simple enough, with most ponies more then willing to offer directions.
On arrival, Lightening and Star would find that Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns was perhaps surprisingly large and impressive, with many building making up the school complex though broken up partly into sectors based on the age of a pony and their grade. It was a university though as well, though the school was structured in such a way as to encourage unicorns to start there young and move up as they got older.
They would, if they ask, find directions to the Main Office, from which they can make any inquiries they may desire. This would count how to find the researcher they sought. Once there, they would see a young mare organizing a number of books onto a cart, thus not noticing their arrival. Her coat was a soft marigold in color, with mane and tail that was dark amber. She was humming a cheery tone though of what the pair wouldn't know.

Not quite brave enough to approach the board alone, Zero stood in the shadow of another pony reading the notices. Glancing at the board he found the old parchment he was looking for and smiled to himself. A call for information on a young pony able to change faces, long ago covered with more recent notices.
However three of the recent notices shined among the other, mundane tasks. Three possible opportunities to prove himself and earn his cutiemark! And there were two ponies talking right there, one obviously an experienced adventurer from an exotic land, replete with exotic sword. He talked to another stallion, lightly packed and one leg slowing him when they started walking away. Zero wondered why pick him as an adventuring partner but remembered no unicorn could be underestimated with their potential for magic. And, did he just mention a nuance in how 'darkness' was defined? It was hard to hear over the din of the city.
His curiosity piqued, he slunk away from the board and into the shade cast by the nearby buildings. All of the notices had contacts in the same direction, so the only way to know where those two were headed would be to follow, as he had done many times before. Another opportunity to learn in the field, while staying at a safe distance. Keeping his dark cloak over his face and flank he tailed his targets at a distance, observing from behind cover.
Out of Character: Oh, I just remembered to take Early Education as a trait. And I did familiar skills wrong, too many class skills. Fixed now.
Upon reaching the school, Star Walker grins widely. "Isn't it wonderful just how big the magic school is? A place of learning, rivaling, surpassing most places in Canterlot. Of course… " His smile falters for a moment. "... Regular schools aren't as lucky, although I'm trying to change that. In fact, if we're successful on this quest, a sizable portion of my reward will go to one of the less-fortunate schools. But I digress… "
As the two went through the school, Star Walker was deep in thought. What kind of artifact would they be looking for? Why such a high reward, yet also having expenses paid for them? He shall find out soon enough.
"Unicorns in particular are fond of our monuments. I've always felt more at peace with the more humble buildings of Earth ponies, and can only imagine the wonders of being a Pegasus and sleeping on clouds. Seems delightful." Realizing he was just idly being grumpy rather than productive, he nodded at Star Walker, "Your plan seems noble indeed. I have to imagine that with more funding, a student would find it easier to rise and join these hallowed halls."
Stepping up to the golden mare, Lightning bowed his head respectfully. "Pardon me, fair maid. I mean not to intrude upon your duties, but need assistance. Could you see it fit to direct my friend and I to the office of Professor Mythos Grey? We would like to discuss a matter of some import with him. Thank you."
Zero sees the unicorns he's tailing enter the school and decides it's time to blend in better with his surroundings. He focuses his inner magic, subtly changing his face to be less recognisable and growing himself a unicorn horn. To complete the illusion and ensure he looks normal, he gives himself the cutiemark of an open book. He hopes the disguise lasts long enough for the meeting.
He runs in, up to the Main Office, flagging the attention of a staff member immediately. "Sorry I'm late," he says in his innocent, childish voice. "I'm Mythos Gray's new assistant. Where do I go?"
Receiving his answer, Zero sprints away until he reaches the two unicorns from before, tailing them and hiding so he can overhear their conversation.
The mare would look to the two stallion, an expression of concern appearing on her face briefly before she smiles hesitantly. Looking from one and then the other she would say, "Um… yes that is fine, though you need to leave your weapons here and allow me to run a scan over you. May I ask the nature of your visit?"
The nature of this request may seem odd, even surprising, yet it would appear the mare was following instruction of some sort. Whether this was general for all visitors or particular to meeting the professor in question would be unknown without the pair asking.
Noticing the younger colt step forward and hearing him out she would gain a confused expression as if what he said didn't make much sense. Still, wanting to give Zero the benefit of the doubt she would reply, "I didn't know Professor Gray was taking on any new assistants at the moment… though he does sometimes neglect to let the office know of changes."
Out of Character: Anyone want to roll a Spellcraft roll? That if if their character agrees to allow a spell cast on them.

For a second Zero's world crashed down around him. Not only had he timed this badly, running into the two ponies he had been tailing. Now he was exposed! But he'd gotten himself out of stickier situations before. His quick wit conjures a story to explain everything.
"He did write that I was only a candidate. Maybe he informed you of the delivery instead?" Untying the rapier sheath from his belt he grabs it in his mouth and places it in front of her. "I have travelled really far! It's important and already delayed!"
"My razor here is the tool of my trade. I bind books!" He opens a wrist sheath to show his small dagger and flicks his flank to expose his fake cutiemark as he flashes an innocent smile.
"So where can I find him? I must go now, I'm already late! Is there even time for your spell?" He hopes at least the noise he's making will be enough to get him moved along.
Out of Character: If not, he braces for the scanning spell.
I thought of perhaps counterspelling it, but that would be too obvious.
For a split second, Star Walker has a look of suspicion on his face, but that quickly vanishes. "... Oh, right… security protocols, I understand." He removes his gear except for his Ring and prepares for the scan. "Is there somewhere safe I can put my traveling gear?"
He then looks towards Lightning and the new-coming colt. "So… um… hello there. My name is Star Walker and that is Lightning Strike. What's your name?"
Once the scan begins, he focuses on the spell to try to understand exactly what the scan is for.
