Star Walker looks at the three most interesting requests. "Hm...the one from the Royal Guards and the church seems important, yet violent. The one about the private venture for the artifact sounds intriguing, yet suspicious. And being a body guard for an expedition to Saddle Arabia? Well..."
He closes his eyes for a moment and ponders. "It seems the least important, yet it could be interesting and it seems to be backed by Lun- the Celestial Sisters. I just...I'm in a bit of a puzzle on what to choose.
Crossroad looms ahead,
Each path filled with potential,
The winds of fate blow.
Lightning quietly considered the three flyers, and the pony to his side. Cultists run. It is their nature to flee before the harsh light of day, scurrying back into the shadows like insects suddenly exposed by a flipped rock. In addition, the Royal guard was a capable group of warriors, who knew the city better than he did. Surely, some local ponies would answer that call. Between the other pony's infirmary, his own lack of familiarity with the city, and how little his blade would likely be truly needed for such a venture, he discounted that flyer. If he hadn't decided to help see Star Walker through his quest, he'd probably have taken that one, then grabbed another in a few days.
Saddle Arabia? It was dry there and sandy, if he recalled correctly. Again, Star Walker's back leg would be a hinderance in escorting a caravan across the world.
No, to his mind, there was one clear choice. Being they were both Unicorns and most likely gifted, he said after a moment of quiet contemplation, "I feel as though we should hear from Mythos Grey, the researcher. If what he has to say doesn't interest us, we could always look into other options."
A dark mystery,
Hidden, shrouded in deep fog,
The world bathed in Grey.
"Hm...I must admit, my curiosity is getting the better of me." Star thinks silently for a moment, then nods. "Yes! That is what I will do! It cannot hurt to ask, after all. I'm sure the Guards have the cultist thing under control, and the desert is a bit too sandy for my tastes, anyways."
Star Walker has been working alone for some time, he's almost forgotten what it is like to work alongside another pony. He has worked for ponies, and has guided ponies, but a partner? He misses those days. It seems most ponies just want the jobs with the high payouts and low work. But this Lightning pony was different. Perhaps they could work together after all.
"Would you like to be a team on this mission, perhaps?"
"If you are not opposed to such." The pale unicorn replied simply. "I will confess, you intrigue me more than the notice boards at this moment. I would like to see what has driven a pony with an infirmity to seek out this sort of life for himself." Lightning lowered his head respectfully toward Star Walker, "And I mean no offense, nor do I seek to imply you are incapable in any way. I just feel that one's honor is in many ways dependant on one's truthfulness. And that is the truth of why I would travel with you for a time. I suspect your tale would make for a lovely poem."
Stepping forward, Lightning plucked the flyer from the board with his mouth an carefully stowed it in a saddlebag at his side. "There, let us go to the college and see this Mythos Grey. If it doesn't pan out, we will have ample time to canter back over and choose something that doesn't involve trackless desert." He began trotting toward the college.
Intentions laid bare,
Light agreed to travel forth,
With dark by his side.
The lame unicorn sadly looks at his weak leg, then back at his new partner. "There is no story behind my leg, but there is a story about why I do what I do despite it." He takes a deep breath and begins to recount his tale.
"There was no injury, no accident that caused my leg to fail to meet its potential. The truth is, I was born with a bad leg. I've learned to live with it, but it wasn't easy. With the physical side of my life lacking, I focused on the mental side. I've studied magic for years while other colts and fillies were out having fun. I worked hard at overcoming my deficiencies through hard work and the art of spellcasting. I also studied history, mythology… quite a few interesting subjects, and learned to love stories of adventure. Most of all, I've found an interest and a… pull, let's say… towards the Celestial Sisters and the Royal Guard. I wanted to protect- I wanted to help out protecting them. Er… especially Princess Luna. She was always the more misunderstood one. The whole Nightmare Moon thing… that… must've been torture for her. She-"
Star Walker pauses for a second and shakes his head. "Sorry, rambling off-topic. Anyways, I attempted to join the Guard. But well… due to my leg, I was rejected. However, I did not give up. I decided to fight for the ideals of Princess Luna. Protecting those who needed protecting. Spreading harmony where I could. And showing that the darkness and the night were not things to fear. There is a difference between darkness and "Darkness", and the night should be cherished. I have gone on quite a few adventures, using my magic and my resolve to see my way through. Somewhere along the lines, my magic… changed. It was… augmented. I could do things that I couldn't do before, involving the moon, and the stars, and the night. It seems my very will had reshaped my magic."
Star Walker takes a break to breathe. "Well… that's enough about me. I am quite interested in your story, or stories, as you look as if you have a lot of them to tell. Perhaps you could share some on the way to our destination?"
The pale stallion listened as Star Walker just shared so much of himself with a relative stranger. Curious. Where he'd foaled, people were more reserved and private, especially about their appreciation of Luna. Still, he listened politely, ears flicking with interest as they walked along. He suspected there was only one way the tale could end, and was proven right as he was asked to reciprocate. He took a breath, looking at the road ahead, then over at the unicorn by his side.
"My story is not as, unusual as yours, I don't think. My parents are ambassadors and I grew up in a different land, with different stories and customs. Like you, there were tales that inspired me. Tales of wandering knights who righted wrongs and protected the weak from wickedness. This knights were capable of incredible martial feats. They could run across the tops of grass, swing a sword so fast they could slice the wind, drink enough spirits to kill a lesser creature." He smiled wryly at that last bit. "I wanted to be like them, so I studied their stories, tried to learn their arts. With time and practice, I was able to channel my magic into replicating the least of their feats, but my hope is that as I travel the world, living in their image, my legend and skills will continue to grow until one day I can be the story that inspires hope in some other young pony's life."
"As to my specific adventures, it is immodest to recount one's own exploits. Could be considered boastful. However, should I get in my cups, we shall see." He inclined his head to Star Walker again.
Star Walker smiles and nods sincerely at the story, understanding completely. He too has heroes he looks up to in the stories he has read, heroes that have inspired him to use his magic over his brawn, heroes that have overcome limitations. He also chuckles at the part about drinking enough spirits to kill a lesser creature.
"Thank you for sharing that with me. I think we are somewhat similar in a lot of ways. I think we should be able to get along nicely. On other matters… "He continues trotting towards the school where Mythic Grey works. "What do you think of the odd nature of this request?"
"I do not find it terribly mysterious." Lightning replied simply, turning his head toward Star Walker as he explained in more detail. "Relatively few ponies are like you and I. Most ponies simply wish to live a life rich with friends, family, and laughter. They care not for confronting the Darkness or righting injustices, unless those dangers directly impact them in some manner. But,there are other ponies who would exploit Equestria's kindness and charity to their own aims. Followers of dark cults, opportunistic rogues, heartless charlatans, and bandits who plunder. The wicked side of our coin."
Pausing in his monologue, Lightning took a sip from his waterskin, then moved onto the actual flyer, "I feel the researcher gave too much information on his flyer, but perhaps that was his intent. If the nature of his research was already known to his enemies, then he loses nothing by making potential candidates aware of the dangers they face. If they were not aware, they now will be. Regardless, be wary, my friend. Do not let your interest in Princess Luna lower your guard."
