I was never a fan of going on ice, I wouldn't even go to the local ice ring so stories like this keeps me away from trying to do 'tricks' on frozen water! Its too dangerous.

Falling Through Frozen Water Dangers History & Civil Business Politics
Frozen water is not dangerous if you know what signs to look for. You can be safe on ice just like you can be safe on a concrete, asphalt or wooden walkway. Education is the key to a lot of safety.
That being said I would be one that would have jumped in to rescue them.

That's just it, people may not know what signs to look for or may read the signs wrong and the result is the loss of life. Too much of a risk for me!
