Pope Francis said today that GOP front-runner Donald Trump "Is not Christian" if he calls for the deportation of undocumented immigrants and pledges to build a wall between the United States and Mexico.
"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel," the Pope said.
He added he would not advise people on whether to vote for Trump.
During the wide-ranging press conference, Francis weighed in on the Zika crisis.
He said that contraceptives may be used in the case of mothers who may be trying to not to get pregnant because of the Zika virus.
"Avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil," the Pope said. He urged doctors to find vaccines against the Zika virus.
The mosquito-borne virus has been linked to a birth defect called microcephaly.
Bishops condemn Trump travel policies
The order temporarily closing the U.S. To travelers and refugees from seven largely Muslim countries is “shameful,” said San Diego Catholic Bishop Robert McElroy. Other bishops and representatives of other faiths also condemned it. Ref. Source 6g.
If the Pope and President Trump can find common ground you would think our Congress could as well. Maybe they just need to sit down and stop playing politics for a few months every year. Maybe we should make that a law. No political speeches and pontificating allowed from February through August… just get some work done. Then you can go at each others' throats again.
