Pope Benedict on Monday reaffirmed Catholic teaching that life begins at the moment of conception, saying embryos are "sacred and inviolable" even before they become implanted in a mother's uterus. Catholic Bishops Tell Congressional Democrats Abortion is Most Important
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Speaking on behalf of the nation's Catholic bishops, three bishops wrote a response to an open statement released by 55 Democrats in Congress earlier this month. The bishops told the elected officials that their statements were a poor response to the "grave violation of the most fundamental human right - the right to life." Most of the politicians who signed the statement vote in favor of abortion, but they claimed to support respecting human life and wanted to see abortions decrease by approving social policies that would contribute to that. The lawmakers indicated other political issues were equally important. The bishops acknowledged that issues like protecting the poor and promoting justice and peace are important -- but not as fundamental as protecting the right to life. "At the same time, we also need to reaffirm the Catholic Church's constant teaching that abortion is a grave violation of the most fundamental human right - the right to life that is inherent in all human beings, and that grounds every other right we possess," they wrote. The bishops referred to Pope John Paul II's writings in the Christifideles Laici, saying the right to life is the central right upon which all other rights exist that human beings enjoy. The bishops applauded the desire to create a society where abortions decline, but stressed the importance of passing pro-life laws to stop abortion entirely.

Pope Benedict: Catholic Church's "Principal" Policy Focus is Pro-Life View
The Vatican (LifeNews.com) -- Pope Benedict XVI told a delegation of politicians in Rome for a meeting of the European People's Party that the Catholic Church's main public policy thrust is the protection of human life from atrocities like abortion, euthanasia and human cloning. He said he hoped pro-life principles would become the bedrock of law throughout Europe. "As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, the principal focus of her interventions in the public arena is the protection and promotion of the dignity of the person," he said. "[S]he is thereby consciously drawing particular attention to principles which are not negotiable," the pope added, referring to the church's pro-life stance. The pontiff called on the elected officials to defend human life "in all its stages, from the first moment of conception until natural death." Pro-life principles "are not truths of faith, even though they receive further light and confirmation from faith," the pontiff added. "[T]hey are inscribed in human nature itself and therefore they are common to all humanity." The head of the Catholic Church told the politicians that Christian faith "conveys values that are fundamental for the good of society" and "the European Union can only be enriched by engaging with it."
