QUOTE
Two 15-year-old Urbandale girls were followed Wednesday evening by a man in a vehicle and police have added this incident to an expanding list of suspicious events, all involving a man targeting young girls.

This is getting to be a serious case. I had a talk with my children and what they should do if a guy or anyone else is following them.

First of all DO NOT go home. This shows the offender where you live and he/she may watch for a few days to find out when your alone.

Second: Walk to a place where there is a lot of activity. If you can walk into a business and call 911. DO NOT leave until you see the police outside. If you have a cell phone call 911. Talk like your chatting with a friend. Tell the 911 operator that you think your being followed and want a police officer. Give details about where you are and what your wearing. Stay on the phone with the 911 operator till police show up.

Third: If you can try to remember as much about the person as you can to be able to help authorities catch this person.

DO NOT confront the person. You do not know if they have a weapon or other means to cause you harm.

So they figure it is the same guy in all the cases and he has already sexually assaulted two sisters? The "string" of events they mention in the article would make any parent scared to let their children out of their site.

Those were some great tips you gave, common sense too which sometimes can be the first thing to go when one panics. I am going to share them with my family as well. I have five children and don't want anything to ever happen to them.

Yes the tips are good things to teach your children. Not talking to strangers is the first thing we tell our kids. If a stranger does not talk to them or follows them we need to give them these tips. We can not always be there to protect them and these tips help a lot. I hope that all parents teach their children to react with what they have been taught rather than panicking. Too often it is the teen aged kids that people like this go after.

Yes they believe it is the same guy and we have people out looking for him. I know there are undercovers randomly choosing parks to monitor. With me living in a small community just south of the metro area we want our children to be aware of this guy. He has proven to strike in small communities as well as the large ones. being less than 15 miles south shows we fall into his possible stalking area. I know I have been visual of late.

Well we will be keeping you and your community in our prayers--not just for your recent natural disaster issues but of an even more precious resource--your children.

I remember being outside one day, my kids were playing ball on the field by the road, a truck pulled up and they all ran to the window. Initially I thought it was someone I knew and they knew--but it was someone looking for their dog. My 10 year old asked if she could go look for the dog in the neighborhood with the other kids. I obviously stayed in sight and close but we had to have a meeting that night and explain how the "next time" it could be someone who is not just a concerned owner of a lost dog and they should never go running to a truck or car when it stops. We had taught them NOT to talk to strangers but in this case, because it wasn't someone walking up to them maybe, they didn't judge them as strangers.

You are right to warn your children. Most child molestors will use their own or some one elses vehicle to do their dirty deeds with. The common ploy is I have lost my dog can you help me. I am looking for it and I do not know this area can you help me? Many kids will help them.

Parents need to warn thie kids about this type of attack. Warning your children about the potential hazards of one who is showing off or lost a dog/puppies. If a man or woman asks your child for help they need to know to come get a parent. Let the parents help search for the dog instead of the kids. If the kids want to go with one of their parents that is fine. 50% of the time the person looking for the lost dog takes off when they see the parents coming.
