A friend is someone who you trust and hang out with. Anyone you do not know can be friendly or nice towards you but you do not trust them or hang with them.

I agree! A friend describes a relationship where to me, friendly is a description of a way to be toward anyone you come in contact with, but not necessarily establish a friendship with.

I can be "friendly" with anyone regardless of whether or not they are friendly in return. Friendliness does not always have to be sincere and often has very little depth. To be a friend implies a degree of mutually exchanged trust, camaraderie and genuine regard. A friend loves me in spite of myself.
