Mormon Parenting

"President Brigham Young instructed parents by saying:

"'If each and every one of us who are parents will reflect upon the responsibilities devolving upon us, we shall come to the conclusion that we should never permit ourselves to do anything that we are not willing to see our children do. We should set them an example that we wish them to imitate.' (Journal of Discourses, 14:192)

"If we are to instill faith in our children, they must see us demonstrate our faith in their young lives. They must see us on our knees daily, asking the Lord for His blessings and expressing our gratitude unto Him. They need to see us using our priesthood to administer to those in need, and to bless our children. They need to see us reverently worshiping in our sacrament meetings. They need to see us cheerfully and willingly giving of our time and talents to the building of the Lord's kingdom here on earth. They need to see us proving our faith by the payment of our tithes and offerings to Him. They need to see us diligently studying and discussing the scriptures to increase our faith and understanding."
Ref. (L. Tom Perry, "Train Up a Child," Ensign, May 1983, 78)

Something good to print out and put on my bedroom door before one of my parents enter. I wonder what will be their reaction to it.

It is definitely worth printing out as a reminder that our children learn more from us by our actions than by our words. They are very quick to pick up on hypocritical behaviors.

The wonderful age of accountability

What could be more wonderful than an 8-year-old? Kids at this remarkable age are still young enough to be sweet and pure and naive, yet old enough to be very conceptual and to "get things" and to be responsible. For the most part, they have not yet learned cynicism and sarcasm, and perhaps most amazing of all, they still think their parents know something. Ref. Source 4

Parenting Mormon

"You know, sisters, if mothers and fathers would, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, strictly follow the commandments of the Lord and the counsels of his prophets to train up their children in the way they should go, the inhabitants of the earth would soon reach that glorious state enjoyed by the Nephites when 'there were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another.'"¦ Book of Mormon Manual p.455 "Although such a blessed state seems beyond our present hope, let us not forget that the Lord has given us the assurance that the survivors of our present generation will enjoy a like society. This assurance should, and I believe it does, give us a determination to train up our children in the way they should go that they, with us, may be participants in the fulfillment of that glorious promise."

("Train Up a Child," Relief Society Magazine, Mar. 1964, p. 169.)
