It is because inside the tavern, there is the possibility of interaction. This way you can give hints in-character, which I think it is even better to add in for the role-play.
That is exactly my thoughts, it leading to interesting interactions. And all things considered I'd be more than happy to have Jonathan take on something of a mentor role for a lot of the younger or less experience characters. Admittedly, this would be more of a trickster mentor but still.

Since all our characters are different and the outcome can be different too don't take every tip as this is definitely what to do because for some reason it might not work for you. That's my tip.
Fripperama, I learned a lot by talking with the towns people. They tell you a lot of what happens in the town but it takes some patience to get through it all but my character is level 10 and hasn't died once *wink*.
I've just started in ROK and its very interesting. I like being able to act and make choices. I did not expect the character sheet to be so involved.
