Is Ignorance An Excuse?
Is Ignorance An Excuse or reason for not knowing important information?
Yes, but only the first time, and only in situations you couldn't foresee and research beforehand, or you simply didn't know where to find out about it.
That's my opinion, but according to U.S. law, ignorance is never an excuse.
There's just so much information out there, how can anybody be expected to know everything? That's why I say yes.
Indygo, you really got the message of this question that Question is asking, but did not say if you were referring to 'excuse' or 'reason'. For me ignorance can only be a reason where opportunity does not permit. For instance a three year old's ignorance of college physics is a given. However, the ignorance of not knowing that you should stop when the light is red is unacceptable unless you were brought up by wolves.
There you go, trying to make me think. Sheesh JB, don't you know how that hurts my head?
I guess to answer your question, we would have to discuss and decide on what the difference is between an Excuse and a Reason. That could be fodder for a whole other thread maybe.
But for the sake of this discussion, let's say they are one and the same. Then I guess what you are saying is there is no straight "Yes" or "No" answer to give Question. I would agree with that. Ignorance can be an excuse in some situations and not an excuse in others.
But I still stay ignorance will always be an excuse for some things, because we will always be ignorant of many things, no matter how old or learned or wise we get.
Ultimately, humans can claim ignorance as an excuse for dying, because if ignorance was completely banished then perhaps we would know of a way to keep living.
Ignorance is an excuse if it was truly ignorance and not just an excuse. If the ignorance was unintentional than it's a true reason. If it was intentional than it's just plain laziness. I do suppose you could give fault for the unknowing but for those who do and don't act are undeserving. To be ignorant to an excuse is to not know why.
Ignorance is only an excuse in the instance that true ignorance is present. The question is simply begging the question. If ignorance is really the reason for an action occurring, then ignorance is a valid reason. But if it is an excuse, then it is no longer a valid reason, but an excuse. So the question begs itself and invalidates a possible response. So the only possible explanation is that ignorance is not an excuse, but can be a reason for an answer or outcome.
Ignorance is a excuse when all the facts, knowledge and opportunities are just in front of your eyes and you are just not interested in learning or what is worst, you are in denial and covering your ears because it may be somethig you do not agree or that you have trouble "digesting".
"The evil that is in the world always comes of ignorance, and good intentions may do as much harm as malevolence, if they lack understanding. On the whole, men are more good than bad; that, however, isn't the real point. But they are more or less ignorant, and it is that we call vice or virtue; the most incorrigible vice being that of an ignorance which fancies it knows everything and therefore claims for itself the right to kill."
