American Muslims need revolutionary, not apologetic discourse. What sin have they committed as a collective, to be pushed into this wretched state of being - having to demonstrate their humanity, defend their religion and distance themselves from every act of violence, even if only allegedly committed by a Muslim, anywhere in the world? It is absolutely insane that people keep demanding that American Muslims stand accountable for the actions of radicalized Muslims in the middle east.

I like to respond by asking for the American Christians who call for such to stand accountable for the actions of the Christians in Africa who recently beheaded thousands of Muslims. It is the same logic after all. They tend to either shut up around me, or start shouting obscenities, after that.

Making history: Rashida Tlaib in Michigan and Ilhan Omar in Minnesota are the first Muslim women elected to the House. Rashida Tlaib, who didn’t have a Republican opponent, won her bid in Michigan’s heavily Democratic 13th congressional district, according to NBC and Vox. She also made history in 2008 by becoming the first Muslim woman ever elected to the Michigan state legislature. Tlaib, a progressive, will serve in the seat of former Democrat Rep. John Conyers, Jr., who resigned last December after allegations that he sexually harassed female staffers. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, was the nation’s first Somali-American lawmaker. She was competing for a safe blue House district in Minneapolis and is also the state’s first woman of color elected to Congress. Her race was called by the Associated Press. Ref. USAToday.
