Two state-run institutions for disabled Iowans are facing increased scrutiny from state and federal officials in the wake of the recent deaths of several residents and numerous health and safety violations. The Glenwood Resource Center and Woodward Resource Center were visited by state inspectors in April. The Glenwood center was fined $5,000 for contributing to a resident's death, and the Woodward center was cited for deteriorating building conditions and violations of residents' rights. |
That article left me shaking my head. Most states have closed the doors on facilities like that and mainstreamed many of the residents. There is still a need for these institutions, but no excuse for such poor management. I work in a psychiatric hospital and we get developmentally disabled patients on occasion. They can be a challenge but there is never an excuse not to treat them with respect and dignity.
Yes that is what I was thinking. They should be cared for and respected just like any other human being. Not to care for someone your getting paid to care for is like sleeping on the job. Fire these people and get some people in there that actually care for their jobs and are willing to do the work required of them.
