A 39-year-old woman has been charged with assaulting a toddler who is still critically ill in hospital, 11 days after he was taken there by relatives.

This is so terrible and sad. What makes is so sad is that this is a universal problem. Child abuse is a worldwide pandemic. This story is unfolding in New Zealand but there are similar stories every day in almost every country. When I was working in child protection there was never a shortage of work. If anything there was never enough time or resources to do the work that was needed. It is the most vulnerable in our society that fall victim to the abuse and neglect.

I agree with alskann. There never seems to be a shortage of work when you're working in a Child Protection business. But what I have noticed, is that many people feel for the mother instead of the child. I disagree with that completely. It was the mother's choice to engage in sexual intercourse, and therefore resulting in the pregnancy. If she did not wish to have a child to tend to, and grow patient with, then she should have taken precautionary measures, or refrain from intercourse.

I fail to see how many people can be tolerant with parents, coming up with excuses such as "They're too stressed, and the child was acting up/crying."

Other than that, I feel sorry for the child. But as they say, we don't choose our parents.

I feel that there is enough people out there that want kids that cannot that take these children out of the abuse they are facing and have loving families to raise them. I believe some women get pregnant just to prove they can do something besides waste air. It is these womens that seem to do the most of the abuse to young children. I hope society improves to better care and stop the abuse of little children. The sad part is I think society is going the wrong way.
