Mount Soledad Cross
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will decide whether to overturn a lower-court decision that allows a Latin cross to stand atop Mount Soledad in La Jolla on land owned by the federal government.
Cross opponents: The cross should come down because as the pre-eminent symbol of Christianity, it is an impermissible endorsement of religion by the state.
Cross proponents: The cross should remain in place because Congress" purpose in acquiring the site was to preserve a secular war memorial, of which the cross is part.
