Exploring phosphorene, a promising new material

Researchers have developed a new method to quickly and accurately determine the orientation of phosphorene, a promising material with potential application as a material for semiconducting transistors in ever faster and more powerful computers. Ref. Source 9u.

Phosphorene

As a chemist, I find this very interesting. A new material nearly like graphene, but a better semiconductor. For those that don't know graphene (Which is what is in your pencil 'lead') is a great material that computer scientist have been trying to incorporate into devices to make them thinner and faster, but it is very easy to mess up with just one atom extra or in the wrong place. When a few extra atoms (Or dopant) is added (On purpose or on accident), then the entire conduction is changed. Something like this phosphorene that is a natural semi-conductor, but still has a 2-D structure like graphene would be a huge boost to the electrical industry. Now we just need to be able to produce is cheaply in mass quantities and incorporate it into devices.

And when I first read the title, I saw phosphine (Which is a very poisonous gas) instead of phosphorene. Just in case anyone else gets confused.
