What can Methane Hydrate taken from the ocean be used for?

Hydrate Methane

If I recall rightly it is a substance found deep in the ocean or under the permafrost. It is being looked at for use as natural Gas fuel source. If harnessed we would have fuel for hundreds of years. So take that green worshipers.

There is the belief that the huge methane bubbles that come from the hydrate is what causes some ships to sink mysteriously. The other point about harvesting it is the process. The cost to tap something like this will be phenomenal.

I forgot about that it is a big issue for boaters as it decreases the buoyancy of the water when it is melting and bubbling up. With global warming it might even get worse.

Yes it will be costly but as the oil stores deplete and technology increases it might get easier. I could see some real ownership issues arise from this.

You want to get the environmentalist all anxious over this now. They are trying to get rid of oil use because it destroys the ecosystem and now you want them to use the more infrequent methane hydrate that they will probably try to secure as a global phenomonom that demands protection.

Actually the issue would be safety. An increased level of this gas bubbling forth and needing to be trapped so as to prevent a decrease n water buoyancy.

I would also think it would be a cleaner fuel then what we use now. Bit more explosive in the case oc fires after an accident that would be a small draw back. Fires do not happen that often.

Like it or not we are still going to burn soemthing as fuel so why not trap one that is cleaner. Want to decrease emissions double the price of oil.

Not nice but true it gets too expensive to run a car people will learn to move closer to their work or demand better public systems. Not nice but would effectively accomplish the goals. Nice part is the increased fuel costs make other fuels systems viable. Once up and running they could in turn get cheaper and give a over all benefit to our grand children. Just a hard road to get there.

Yes very hard road to get there. You have to get peoples mind on getting something different. I believe that $4 a gallon gasoline will turn more into that line of thinking. While you can argue that Methane Hydrate is a viable option I am not sure how easy it is to separate out from the ocean water. This is where the cost comes into play with it. Granted that it could be a safety thing with boaters and cruise ships. I still think we are more than five years from getting methane hydrate as a possible alternate fuel source.

Chemists settle longstanding debate on how methane is made biologically

Like the poet, microbes that make methane are taking chemists on a road less traveled: Of two competing ideas for how microbes make the main component of natural gas, the winning chemical reaction involves a molecule less favored by previous research, something called a methyl radical. Reported today the work is important for understanding not only how methane is made, but also how to make things from it. Ref. Source 2f.
