I've considered joining the emergency services on more that one occasion. Though when I think about joining I look at whats involved and I don't think I have what it takes to react at precisely the right time and do precisely the right thing. The emergency services are not credited enough for what they have to go through sometimes. I think the best thing is its all in a days work to them.
What type of emergency services? I used to do HAZMAT work and I can say the pay is great, the jobs are interesting, and you never know where you'll end up.
On the downside; death is a definite possibility, people will die and you can't help it, getting decontaminated is annoying, your feet turn black, and you have to wear a diaper. Edited: Dextral on 20th Dec, 2006 - 3:21pm
Early screening spots emergency workers at greater risk of mental illness
Emergency services workers who are more likely to suffer episodes of mental ill health later in their careers can be spotted in the first week of training. Researchers wanted to see if they could identify risk factors that made people more likely to suffer post-traumatic stress (PTSD) or major depression (MD) when working in emergency services. Ref. I can see this and it takes a special person to be a emergency worker. You are going to be facing some of the worse moments in peoples lives and it is not always easy dealing with that. I could see me doing some of the jobs such as disaster relief but an ambulance worker like a EMT first responder? No I am done with that.
