Prayers: Request baffles LDS official

SAN ANGELO, Texas - A judge wants to see if local LDS Church members would be willing to help supervise prayer services at the makeshift shelter where Fundamentalist LDS women and children are being housed.

In response, a local official of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said he was baffled by the judge's suggestion.

I don't get it. Why was this official "baffled"? Is it because is the FLDS involved? Would he be baffled if the request came related to another Church?

The Church through its spokesman gave a statement about it, what do you all think?

QUOTE
"We only have news reports of what a judge said in court. We have had no contact from judicial officials and therefore no clear understanding of what, if anything, we are being invited to do.

It would be erroneous to base any request for assistance from members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the basis that our beliefs and practices are close to those of this polygamous group because they are not.

Neither would such a request necessarily be fair to those of this polygamous community, which long ago chose a different path from ours. In fact, many in these isolated communities view us with some hostility as part of the outside world they have rejected."

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has taken steps to better inform the public about differences between the Salt Lake City-based church and the polygamous group in Texas that calls itself the FLDS.

Yes, and Yes.

Why would the judge decide that the LDS church should lead prayer services or be involved in any way with this FLDS group? It means that he sees no difference between the two groups. Why didn't he ask the local Catholics or Baptists or the Salvation Army? Because this judge doesn't associate them with the group.

It would also be an odd request to ask the LDS church to lead prayer services for the Catholics or Baptists, or for them to lead prayer services for us.

Roz, we have more in common with the FLDS than with the Catholics and any other religion. I could make a list of all the things we have in common, it is only natural for someone who does not know much about these Churches to make some sort of connection between the two.

In my opinion, whether we want to admit it or not, we have a lot of things in common with the FLDS from history to some beliefs.
