I just want to say, I really like the little "Insight" into the grell's thoughts. But also, I'm (Not Carrick) kind of scared right now because Grells at level two aren't anything to mess with, and getting us split up and the surprise? Just, just, dang… (Laugh).
I did debate whether this would be an encounter that would prove to be too difficult and might result in a TPK, especially with the Grell having the element of surprise. It's always difficult when trying to figure out what kind of major encounter will give the party a challenge. Too much and you get a TPK but not enough and the players take out challenge in a handful of rounds. I've had it happen where I have tried to match the challenge rating to the character level and had the encounter end before it even gets started. On the other hand, I did mention in the beginning that death is a very real possibility in this game and I often do not tailor encounters to the character level or ability.
A very difficult encounter indeed, but not necessarily insurmountable. I look forward to seeing whether or not the heroes are able to overcome this one; if they do they will be local heroes for sure!
To save us some confusion for our next posts, for those of us coming from the cave, will we have any movement left when we get outside? Possibly even enough to engage? Since we had to drop down to crawl inside, I am assuming we won't be able to engage, but we might have enough to move a bit. As a rogue, it will make a difference to my actions.
The problem is that only one person is able to get through at a time; I think I will allow the player to move through it and have enough left over to make an attack, but again only one person is able to get through each round so the others are basically still in the den waiting for their turn to get through.
The first person through the hole is going to be able to make an attack on the first round of combat but the other two will not be able to do so. That means that the second one in line is not going to be able to contribute much until round two and the the third one out will not be able to contribute much until round three.
I totally forgot that the new updated ranger class has advantage on initiative rolls. I will roll again here.
Also, just want to point out that since we are in initiative, I have not made my way up the hole and thus am not blocking it. I merely was saying that's Carrick's immediate intent is to head back up the tunnel, but will actually do so on his turn.
-edit- per the HP update, awesome! Thanks!
