Out of Character: Did you say something about us leveling up to 2nd level? If so how do you want us to go about that?

In Character: Mradoric looks about while they are heading towards this smelly hole for any herbs that he can use to help the party out. Once they get to the hole he will look around for a stout branch that has fallen to make a torch so we can toss it inside to see what if anything in inside.

Looking at the den Zinna grins. " This looks like fun. We should send in Mradoric first. He relishes walking bravely into danger. " She giggles and pats the young monk on the shoulder. Zinna glances at Corren. " I will go if no one else wishes to. So are we looking to be stealthy going in or make some noise to frighten out any wild animals that might be using it as a den? If they are I would rather face them out here in the open. I have the means to really startle whatever is in there if you wish. Whatever you think. " Zinna twists a lock of hair subconsciously while saying this and laughs.

The Scout of the Deep Wilds says...

Carrick will step forward at Zinna's words, taking it almost as a slight to his courage, "I'll go in an' give a quick look 'round; I be a dwarf after all!" He gives a small chuckle to himself and looks around the group, "Livin' under ground fer all yer life has sum 'dvantages… "

Carrick proceeds to crawl into the hole as quietly as he can until it opens up into a bigger space, at which point he will give a look around.

The Maker says...

For a moment it looks as though Carrick is going to get stuck when he first attempts to assault the hole in the ridge. His feet kick wildly at first as his stout body gets lodged into the small hole but eventually he breaks loose and begins to shimmie through the tight space.

The hole only extends about ten feet before it opens up and a scene of horror is revealed. Humanoid remains are scattered throughout a small cavern approximately 20'x15' in diameter with a seven foot tall ceiling.

The remains are in various states of decay and women and children appear to among them. Some you recognize from Clear Creek. As Carrick looks about the stench is nearly overwhelming; his eyes fall onto a body tossed near the far wall, a body that seems to be familiar. As he approaches for a closer look he sees a corpse dressed in leather armor with what appears to be an adventurers pack on its back. Closer inspection reveals a component pouch and a rabbits foot then as he looks at the face he realizes that it is one he recognizes… the half eaten face of Aves.

The Scout of the Deep Wilds says...

Carrick stands shocked for a moment at the sight before him. Seeing some of the bodies belonging to people he knew in Clear Creek fills the dwarf with a rush of emotion all at once: fear, sadness, confusion and anger all at once. Finally he mutters, "By th' Maker, why?"
Carrick slowly pulls out his hand-axe in his right hand and skinning dagger in his left, preparing to defend himself from anything lurking in the cavern. Then yells up the tunnel, "Corren! Light a torch an' get down 'ere!"

Out of Character: Carrick is readying an attack action in case his yelling provokes something hostile to come at him.

Hearing the scout call for him, Corren quickly lights a torch and begins to worm his way into the cave. He muses silently, {Well, with that bellow there is no need for stealth.} As he begins to emerge into the open area he rolls to his feet and comes forward, his torch illuminating the entire grisly scene. Any quip he was about to utter dies on his lips. "By the gods," he whispers. He remains silent for a few moments, fighting for self-control. "Damn… damn… " He finally pulls himself together and says, "As much as I want to rage and grieve, we have work to do. We'll need to count them, identify them by looks, or belongings… but first, whatever did this might be hiding among the dead. Start carefully checking for other exits and tunnels, and keep your back to the wall." He turns towards the entrance and raises his voice. "Zinna, Mradoric, Roland! Tether the animals to some trees, then get in here. Be warned, it's not a sight for the faint of heart. And Roland, if you can't fit through the hole, stand guard." He then gestures for the dwarf to move along the wall to their right, while he moves along to the left, checking for other tunnels, and signs of movement among the corpses.

Mradoric follows Corren into the hole in case he is needed. As he enters the larger room and sees the bodies he gags some. "Oh my this is not good. I know many will be wanting the blood of who or whatever did this to their kin." Mradoric will start moving about checking each body over. HE will watch for any movement in case something is in here with them.

The Maker says...

It had been watching them for some time. It had been stalking a group of goblins that it followed back to the farm of its most recent victims, intent on picking them off one by one during the night. These humanoids had challenged the goblins though and killed most of them.

One of them, a slender figure with pointed ears not unlike some of its victims in the forest, had split away from the others. Not knowing when it's next meal would come the creature decided to strike and through surprise was able to take down the pointy eared one without his comrades being the wiser.

It took its victim back to its place of hoarding and then returned to find the farm empty. But it came across these creatures again at another farm that it had been stalking but choose not to strike as these ones seemed more dangerous. Instead it continued to follow them from a distance. It had to do something about them though lest they disrupt its feeding ground. Now, here they were at its hoarding place. Were they going to take the creatures kills for themselves? It could not stand for that, and it could only deny its bloodlust for so long. It decided that it should strike now while the group was split and vulnerable.

It looked like there were two of these things that remained outside of its hoarding place, the other three had gone in. The big one would need to be taken down first… he seemed to represent the most immediate threat. Weaving through the foliage the creature silently floated toward its target

+

Roland and Zinna watch Mradoric enter the den then Roland catches movement out of the corner of his eye just in time to see a strange figure floating quickly toward him. The thing looks almost like a giant olive colored floating brain with a beak attached. Dangling from its spherical ‘body’ are maybe a dozen olive green tentacles. You can spy no eyes and the beak is the only thing that seems to indicate where its front is.

The creature moves quickly and a tentacle lashes out at Roland, but with a clang the thorny looking tentacle pings off of Rolands breastplate. The creature's beak clamps down on the chainmail covering Roland’s clavicle. The beak fails to penetrate Roland’s armor but the force of the ‘bite’ is enough that Roland hears a faint crack and experiences a flash of pain (Roland takes 6hp in damage)!

Everyone roll initiative!
