The Maker says...

The only thing that seems amiss is a slight rumbling beneath the feet of the party, almost imperceptible. Just as Carrick knocks an arrow though the ground seems to explode beneath Zinna throwing clumps of dirt and grass through the air. Zinna staggers back as she hears a loud clack almost directly in front of her, the sound of teeth or mandibles clapping together!

For a moment everyone's sight is obstructed by the dust and debris that has been tossed into the air but as the dust settles a large insect looking creature stands in the place where Zinna was only moments ago. The creature has numerous legs and an almost triangular shaped bony head. Two large pointed legs protrude from its thorax which flail about in front of the thing giving it the appearance of a prying mantis the size of Clydesdale horse!

Out of Character: : You are guys must have found some way to rig the dice… I keep rolling low on attack rolls for creatures!

Initiative: Mradoric (18), Malek (17), Creature (17), Leo (16), Carrick (14), Corren (14), Father Marcellus (13), Zinna (4).

Mradoric thinking that the creature has attacked Zinnathyra attacks it with his staff. HE will also use a point to attack with his monk ability.

Out of Character: I rolled for two rounds hoping that will help speed things up. He only has the Ki for two rounds then will have to go back to only one extra unarmed strike attacks.

The wise says...

Seeing the giant insect suddenly explode out of the ground causes Malek to take a step back, composing himself he starts to worry what happened to the bard she was just standing there. Quickly he cycles through his head looking for the right spell, yes that will work he begins to cast and a ghostly hand appears in front of him. Once the hand is fully formed Malek points at the bug and sends the hand flying towards it hopefully it finds it target.

Malek Szul Results:
  • Chill touch attack on D20 (+5): 6 (1 roll)
  • Chill touch damage on D8 (+0): 6 (1 roll)

The Maker says...

Mradoric advances on the beast and issues forth a series of strikes, first bringing his staff around in a small arc he connects with the things bony thorax but the staff fails to do any real damage as the creatures natural armor absorbes the blow. The same applies for all but one of his unarmed strikes which he manages to land in soft spot with a satisfying crunch doing 6hp of bludgeoning damage.

Malek sends a ghostly frost ridden hand toward the creature which grasps at the creature but fails to latch on. The creature’s head swings from right to left, its large sharp pincers dig into Zinna’s sides and she is lifted off of the ground taking 9hp of slashing damage! (DC 13 Dexterity roll to escape) The creature emits a spray from its mandible; some form of pale green fluid that splashes onto Zinna’s torso and seeps in through her leather armor and as it does so she feels as though her skin is on fire as she takes an additional 5hp in acid damage.

Initiative: Mradoric (18), Malek (17), Creature (17), Leo (16), Carrick (14), Corren (14), Father Marcellus (13), Zinna (4).

Leo moves in, Glaive flashing with Radiant magics as he attempts to strike the creature in the neck and hopefully weaken its grip on the bard.

Note: Moving to within 10', and attacking with both main and bonus action. He'll burn a spell slot applying Divine Smite to the first attack that hits. Reminder, Great Weapon fighting applies, if the first damage roll for either melee strike is 4 or 5 (Base roll 1 or 2), use the second result, even if it happens to be lower. Divine Smite is 2d8, and while RAW suggests GWF would apply to that damage as well in this case, I'm pretty sure that isn't RAI, so those two rolls are just added together with the rest.

Out of Character: : Not my turn but just posting damage results. I won't be able to roll a dexterity roll on my turn. She is unconscious and at 0 hit points.

Zinna looks up at the huge creature in shock. She tries to summon up a spell appropriate for this situation but she freezes up. Seeing the mandibles swinging toward her she tries to duck away. Still moving as if in a trance she fails to escape. The mandibles dig into both of her sides and drive into her rib cage. The creature lifts her off the ground which causes even more pain. Zinna screams in agony and terror of what might happen next. She struggles to break free only causing the mandibles to dig in more. While struggling she feels some kind of liquid touching her skin under the ripped armor. The liquid starts burning into her and she feels as if her skin is being cooked. She flails around wildly for a moment trying to escape the pain. She screams even louder from the intense agony then collapses limp still impaled by the mandibles.

Corren barely notices the rumbling due to being on horseback, but he hears the eruption of dirt behind him. He whirls and at first only sees a cloud of dust and haze, but it quickly settles to reveal the huge insect-like creature, facing towards the rear of the column. Before he can react, as a couple of the others attack the monster, he sees its head dip down and come back up, familiar dark leather armor visible clasped in its mandibles. The screams from Zinna make his blood run cold. In an instant he is moving, almost without thinking. He leans and grabs onto a large limb he had just ducked under before the attack and levers himself from the saddle into the lower branches of a large oak tree. His eyes quickly trace a path along sturdy branches that take him behind the oak, into the branches of an elm and right over the beast. Not even realizing how much effort he needs to exert to be as nimble as a squirrel, he skips from branch to branch, not in complete silence, but enough so that the sounds of battle should help hide him. As he reaches the limit of the branch he leaps, drawing his rapier in mid-air and stabs at the hideous form as he lands…

Out of Character: : Tied in Initiative with Carrick, so here we go. First, Bonus Action Hide. If the Stealth roll is good enough, he gets advantage on the attack, so will roll it twice in case it works. If he hits, two comrades already in melee give him Backstab damage…

The Maker says...

Leo thrusts the blade of his glaive forward causing the blade to slice between two of the things exoskeletal plates and as it does so there is a flash of light that emits from the blade searing its flesh. The creature shrinks back in pain and then in a fit rage tosses Zinna’s limp body aside and turns to face Leo, its pincers snapping in anger! Zinna falls into a patch of underbrush and comes to rest face down.

Corren disappears into the trees and moves quickly from one branch to the other, the creature with his attention on Leo fails to notice as Corren drops down next to it and drives his rapier into the middle of its thorax apparently piercing the creature's heart causing it to curl up, fall prone, and begin to twitch in death throes.

Out of Character: : I’m going to say that if you are keeping the creature at 10’ I don’t think Leo will be able to follow up an attack with the second bludgeoning attack. This is based on the description of the feat which, while it does not specify range, it states that you are making a second attack with the opposite end of the weapon and I don’t really envision this happening from 10’ away. In this instance it doesn’t have much of an impact as that second attack was a miss, but for future reference if you want to use the second attack you will need to be within five feet of the opponent.

I made a mistake in the initiative, Corren should go first since in the event of a tie it goes to the one with the higher Dexterity (Corren is 16 and Carricks is 14). Looks like a repeat of the Grell encounter; sorry… poor Carrick; it seems like you’ll never get an opportunity to join in the fight; it's always over by the time your turn comes around! Fighters and paladins apparently put out a massive amount of damage that first few rounds!
