Malek unrolls his bedroll and plops down on it. Digging through his pouch he finds a candle, using his hands he digs a hole just big enough to hold the candle upright. Next he snaps his fingers and the wick comes to life with a small flame. He gets out a book and some of his rations and sits there trying to relax before he drifts off to sleep he snuffs out the candle. When it's his turn to take watch he will get out his spell book and study his spells and preparing his mind for the day all the while keeping one eye on his surroundings.
14th day of Mirtul, 233 Imperial Calendar--Unknown Location
Zinna wakes to the sound of tearing and the webbing that she finds herself encased in is slowly torn away revealing the face of a young male elf. The elf is dressed in little more than a loincloth. There are various tribal tattoos on his arms and chest but on his forehead is a strange tattoo, an elven script which Zinna is able to loosely translate as “Untouchable” or perhaps “Outcast.” The elf says nothing but helps Zinna out of the cocoon and clears away the strands of webbing that continue to cling her her body though he appears very cautious about actually touching her any more than he has to in order to help her up; in fact if Zinna moves in any way to touch him he recoils. The elf has a small frame and appears exceedingly frail, even by elven standards; his rib cage is clearly visible and his face is gaunt with his cheeks sunken in and dark circles under his eyes. His movements seem strained and impaired in some way and Zinna can see that he has the same puncture marks, now mostly scars, along his sides.
Looking around Zinna can see that she appears to be underground. A soft green light emanates from patches of moss throughout the walls and floors of the cavern which provides some small amount of illumination but it is otherwise dark. There is a single entrance/exit, a corridor that branches away from the cavern but Zinna can only see darkness coming from the corridor and cannot determine how far the corridor stretches or where it leads. She finds that she is not alone. Aside from the elven man that just removed her from the cocoon there are maybe a dozen others who occupy the cavern. Most are elves although she can see that there is a small figure, perhaps a gnome or halfling, among them as well as a larger figure, maybe an orc, who sits alone at the far end of the cavern, his back against the wall.
Scolandi Wilds
The dawn brings with is a crisp chill in the air, anyone that did not sleep in a tent finds that their blankets/bedrolls are wet with dew and for the first hour or so you can see your breath on the air as Carrick continues to lead the party through the increasingly thick forest, slowly following the trail left by the Illiosani spider. About mid-day the distinct smell of a campfire fills your nostrils along with the scent of some form of meat cooking. Does the party wish to investigate this further or attempt to avoid?
Corren gestures for Carrick and the others to move close together to facilitate whispering. "We can't assume whomever is cooking is not a threat. If we get past them and they become a problem when we leave, I'd feel foolish. Carrick, go slowly and recon. Then report back and we'll decide what to do. I'm going to back you up. If you get into trouble, sing out and I'll be right there. The others won't be too far back, and can ride to our rescue."
Out of Character: : Corren will remain about 30 feet behind Carrick, bow ready. I will make a Stealth roll, just in case.
"Aye!" the dwarf gruffly whispers in agreement and starts off toward the source of the smell. As he's slowly getting closer, Carrick pauses every few moments or so to listen for voices or any other activity as well as look around the ground for any type of tracks that may give insight on who or what is up ahead.
Once the campfire or any of its attendants becomes visible, he'll stop far off enough to not be seen and survey the scene.
As Carrick draws closer to the source of the smell he begins to pick up tracks and follows them; they look like the tracks that perhaps a large bird might leave and from the variation in size he would estimate that there are three distinct creatures, most likely bipedal. Eventually he comes to a point where he can some kind of muffled conversation but any distinct words that he catches he is unable to recognize the language. Edging closer three figures come into view, huddled around a camp fire. They are wearing tattered black hooded cloaks that cover most of their bodies and their face although Carrick does catch glances of beaks and birdlike legs.
Out of Character: : These are Kenku, they have not been directly encountered Asendar but many Dwarven and Elven cultures have had contact with them. Carrick would likely have some very basic information probably children's stories about these raven like creatures [Brandonfett may elaborate on these stories to some extent related mostly to stories about the Kenku's greed and their ability to mimic sounds] for more extensive knowledge Carrick will need to make a successful Lore check DC15.
Zinna trembles when she wakes up and realizes she is in the cocoon. The tearing sound of the cocoon being torn open wakes her. She looks at the elf that tears her loose in anger at first until she sees his tribal tattoo on his forehead. Glancing around the cavern she comes to the conclusion that they are all in the same situation she is. Her eyes glint in anger. Someone was going to pay for doing this to her. Fury burns through her as she thinks for a moment. She looks at the elf and the rest of the group for a moment.
A wicked grin appears on her face. She might have her army right here. Zinna walks over to the large figure with his back to the wall. She attempts to communicate with the figure. " Hi, I'm Zinna. Is your spirit being used to feed the trees as well? Are you a prisoner against your will? " If he appears unable to understand her she will then address the small humanoid the same way. She will also talk to several elves to get the feel whether they are there voluntarily to serve the ancestors or were forced here. Zinna will ask them the same questions.
Specific Action: Zinna is using her insight skill to assess the situation fully before acting.
After studying the avian-like figures for a few moments, trying not to call attention to himself, he realizes by their awkward speech that these must be Kenku. Rumors of these creatures did make their way around the dwarven strongholds, but mostly about how not to trust them and more importantly how agonizing it is trying to communicate with one as it was said they can only mimic what they've already heard. For this, and other reasons the dwarf knows not, Kenku weren't allowed within many of major market places and definitely not the strongholds themselves.
Carrick then makes his way back to Corren and still keeping his voice low, "Seems it be jus' sum rav'n folk. Ye know, Kenku? Any way, I don't know if they be 'f any help though. Was always told if a Kenku can see yer coin purse, they both be gone in a moment… "
Carrick then waits for Corren's instruction.
