The case of Micah Xavier Johnson and the way the police dealt with it by using a robot to basically blow him up has gotten a buzz started with the morals of doing that. To heck with morals, the guy is a killer and would have killed more. He got an opportunity to give up and chose not to so robot or not he has to be stopped.

With the fire power he had it did not make any sense to send in officers to take him down. That would have caused more deaths or seriously injured officers. This was the correct way to eliminate a serious threat without putting more lives on the line.

Police don't use robots as a first plant but as a last resort when negotiations have failed to get the shooter to turn himself in. To keep the battle from going on for days and / or causing more injury something has to be done, in comes the robot.
