Newly released court documents show OPP were minutes away from trying to forcibly remove a First Nations blockade that closed Highway 401 during last summer's aboriginal day of action.

I think it would have been the right move if they had been forced to remove the blockade by force. Noone should have the right to blockade a major route.

The issue is do the OPP have the right or Authority to act in this case? It is a bit grey as Aboriginal issue are a federal issue but they were off their reserve but was culture movement so to speak.

I think the works should have be in lock up, though the resounding repercussions from their political bodies would have been loud to say the least.

I personally am getting tired of the Native and Quebec squabbles and wish the government would make their decision then stand behind it. No different then any other land dispute between private people or industries. If a wrong was done and can be proven then make it right if it can not be proven then go home and take it as a lesson learned like every one else has to.

If they were off their "protected" lands then they are just like any other citizen and subject to the same laws as everyone else. It would be a different story and would take federal action if they did this on their own land. The OPP should have had jurisdiction here and if they moved in they would be more in the right.

Only there is a shooting indecent a few years back that occurred and now the OPP are more "cautious" as a result. But I agree they should have removed the illegal demonstration. I can understand the natives being frustrated with the no action on behave of the federal government. They should be staking out the one in charge though not harassing innocent people trying to get to work; might get more public support also.

I can understand their caution and not wanting to get the public up cry too high. Getting the leader and punishing them is a good idea but that could back fire too. I believe if enough people speak out against what happened the natives will fall back onto their land and be less vocal for the time being.
