A few years ago a young girl was kicked in the head in a martial arts club in South Wales. She later died. This is one of the reasons most small clubs in contact based martial arts can't afford the necessary insurance premiums. Practicing main stream martial arts in the UK can be very expensive.
I have gone to many martial art studios and watched the way they train. I know that there is a no contact rule while training. If you are sparing all safety equipment must be worn. I think if a person is not going to wear safety equipment then they do not spar.
It is sad to see someone die from sparring. I think having a heart condition is something that this person should have been aware of. Checking with a medical professional before doing something like this is a must. This proves that fact.
There are plenty people walking around as though they are healthy and yet they are not. I won't say that I'm any kind of guru about fighting, but from what little I know you have to be really in tip top shape for a fight especially where hardening your body is concerned. You can't drink, party and then the next day exert your body to its' limit. Then there are also those who are willing to die for a sport. Maybe he knew he had a problem but chose to ignore it. If you have a heart problem then there is usually a sign or two given before it gives out, so I'm pretty sure he knew about it.
This is the paradox of competitive combat arts, both combatants are trying their best to injure each other, done as safely as possible.
I once was in a class where someone cracked their skull on the floor, I broke my collar bone while sparring, also I tore my septum on the laces of an opponents Thai Boxing glove.
Martial arts are by definition violent, but they can be safe.
What you can't do is stand in lines punching the air for ever.
That's why there is a difference between looking healthy and being fit. Personally, contact sports are the true measures of skill but they often lead to life changing injuries or death. I look forward to the day when they have matrix / Star Trek type generators that can simulate these things without having to be physically hurt. I hope he did not leave any children behind.
