Is Meteorology - Climatology a popular subject of study in Peru? Who are some of the most known atmospheric sciences people from Peru?

In Peru which natural occurrence happens the most often: storms, flooding, earthquake, blizzards, drought, heat or cold wave, and so forth?

Storms Weather Peru

Peru sits right on the coast and get's hit with intense rains during an El Niño. About once every decade it gets hit with something aking to super storm. Back in the 90s I was there doing counter drug stuff and they were slammed. We were pulled off of mission temporarily to help them rebuild along with a National Guard engineer unit that was sent. Peru is a relatively poor country and they were ill equipped to handle this and they appreciated our help.

These events will probably become stronger and more frequent as weather patterns change due to climate change. If that is the case then Peru will need a lot of help from us and her neighbors. Peru is a gorgeous country with very reasonable costs and a large expatriate population that is growing. The expat population is mostly American although there are some Europeans. So it behooves us to help when these things hit as there are US citizens there.
