Apparently he was considered to be a confident, shrewd man who made sure his business is successful and in control. Despite this, illness took over him as he was diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis (Narrowing of the spinal cord) which eventually led him to having a wheelchair. He was not alone since his sister and mother also had wheelchairs but felt that the man who must take control of everything shouldn't be in this situation.
I'm assuming he committed suicide because he already accomplished everything he wanted to do - except not falling ill and be considered 'invalid' or forgotten. After all, he did write one last letter to his friends mentioning the same message. Edited: Felipe on 27th Mar, 2019 - 1:59pm
