Luckily no serious harm done to the residents or the Firefighters! I heard the gas company was first in they responded to a strange smell in the building then called for the firefighters. suspected it was a gas leak but now I think it was a defective transformer overheated. The smell was likely oil vapor from the tx (transformer).
Last I heard they were evaluating the stability of the building.

You are very correct. I ponder since every vault is vented could that have been the saving grace and reduced the back pressure slightly. Scary part is they are considering letting them move back in I have to Google and update later.

Believe it or not they are letting people get some items and are saying four plus weeks before a finial answer will be given. Cause of fire still unknown, might have ben a gas then after all but I would have thought if that was the case it would have been worse. The heavy smoke clouds still make me think it was the oil.
I know a home burning produces black as ink clouds as well due to the chemical in every think we own and the oil based plastic we all love so much.

How fortunate that nobody was hurt. I wouldn't want to be going back into that building any time soon. In fact, if I lived on the same block I would go someplace else until they had resolved the exact cause. Since the explosion originated in the hydro vault I would be leary of the entire area.
