Its good to see Mattis stating his independent position on Russia and the face that we weren't be buddies militarily even if Trump wants to negotiate politically.

They say Mattis isn't as 'mad dog' as he is made out to be but with Trump at the helm he may be forced to be because there is war in the air and Trump's bolstering may make it a hard fight because there will be lots to prove to the world.

Trump announces Mattis leaving in February. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis will step down from his position early next year, President Donald Trump announced Thursday evening.
"General Jim Mattis will be retiring, with distinction, at the end of February, after having served my Administration as Secretary of Defense for the past two years," Trump tweeted.
Trump touted the "Tremendous progress" that has been made during Mattis' tenure at the helm of the Defense Department and thanked Mattis for his service. Ref. CNN.

Mattis announced last week he was stepping down Feb. 28 because of disagreements with Trump ranging from Syria to global alliances and sparking deep anxiety among lawmakers about national security. Strange that there is a sudden rush to have the new guy in place and Mattis out so quick, there might be more to all of this.
