Its amazing to me that we have to worry about keeping the horse population down in times like these where wildlife is dying. I hope they don't decide to start making more horse meat burgers.

The problem with animals like horses and deer we face in the US is that we've gotten rid of all their natural predators. In order to maintain something resembling the natural balance, we're forced to either reintroduce said predators, and/or step into that role ourselves.

As you can imagine, not many housewives are thrilled about any suggestion that we encourage the spread of cougars and wolves.

I cringe whenever this subject comes up, but I cannot think of a better solution. Well, short of genetic modification of the species to promote slower reproduction rates, but even if we were skilled enough in GMO tech to pull that off easily and without side impacts i'd object to, I somehow suspect that plan will likewise have its detractors.
