SEAL fought to keep dog, got new mission
When Navy SEAL Trevor Maroshek retired from the military in 2011, his early requests to keep his service dog, Chopper, were denied. For 1 1/2 years, the Imperial Beach man fought the bureaucracy until he finally received approval. Ref. Source 6z.
I think those that serve with these animals should be allowed to keep them. Who will know that dog better than the one who fought with the dog? It could also be very therapeutic for the retired soldier.
