Nicole Pryjma, from Canada, was appearing as a witness in the trial of Tatsuya Ichihashi in Chiba City, east of Tokyo.
Ichihashi, 32, has admitted raping and strangling Ms Hawker in March, 2007, but claims he did so accidentally.
Miss Pryjma was asked by the prosecutor what she has seen when she was asked to identify the body of Miss Hawker.
"Her hair had been cut off on one side," she told the court. "Her face was totally bruised. She was a strong girl, but he had beaten all the strength out of her.
"Lindsay was very caring and empathetic and nurturing. She was always around and someone I could talk to. Lindsay had a big personality and was very confident." (telegraph.co.uk)
