BalmolochSerech the Enchanter

Balmoloch Serech considers himself a man of honor - since youth, he has been a friendly soul, but a firm believer in justice… even above law. He would welcome a stranger to share his food, but should a man ever pull a knife on him, he will ensure that this man suffers - and if he is fortunate, he will die. Bal's revenge is is swift and terrible, but those who would call him ally will find him considerate and loyal to a fault. As a boy he spent much of his time doing physical work, but rather than spending his money on trinkets and girl, as his companions did, he would spend it on wise men, asking they to speak with him and debate matters of the world in return for coin. This paid off, as one such man was a wizard, and, impressed by this youth who had such enthusiasm for knowledge, offered to teach him magical arts. While Bal was often busy, he made time to visit his scholarly friend whenever possible. While Balmoloch was sadly unsuited to most magical arts, he excelled in enchantment - particularly in spells linked to earth and stone. The wizard taught him accordingly, and now Bal travels as a sort of companion for mercenaries. That is, if a mercenary agrees to pay him a portion of his coin, Bal will use his magic to strengthen said mercenary, ensuring that he shall easily conquer foes that normally would be a challenge. Bal stands a tall six foot 3, and though he has spent much of his life as a laborer, he is still somewhat thin, rather than muscled. He has long black hair, green eyes, and pale skin, and his high cheekbones and piercing gaze give him a noble and pleasant appearance. He aims to one day be a leader of a land - maybe a small barony, or maybe a great empire, and he believes that becoming a skilled Enchanter will garner him the power and respect he needs to rule. He is fond of Dwarves, for the gruff and straightforward approach they take to life - they drink ale, work hard, know how to laugh and respect those who earn it, and for this reason Bal feels they are the most respectable race in general. He is also fond of lizards and rats, pork, beer, and anyone who can skillfully play music. As an intellectual, he is surprisingly easygoing and laid back, but also easily enraged if he feels slighted or betrayed.

Advisor Description

Yarra is a lower noblewoman - she was once a warrior, an archer, who traveled as a mercenary, plying her skills as a killer to the highest bidder. Her skill with a bow was above average, and in her home city, she was respected, and never short of work. One day, while returning from a hunt for a particularly nasty beast, she was a young boy running through the woods, chased by a massive wolf. The beast was as tall as a man, but she feared for the young boy, who would surely be caught. She fired an arrow at it, and it turned on her. It chased her as she rode her horse, firing arrow after arrow, until the beast lunged at her. He arm was terribly wounded, but this attack was the beasts last act - loss of blood from its many arrow wounds finally killed it. The boy ran to her, and she led him back to the town, her arm soaked in blood. As they arrived at the town gates, she finally collapsed. Three days later she awoke, and the healer told her she would never shoot again. But the boy was the son of a Count, and though he could not bestow upon her a higher title, he had her knighted. Dame Yarra will never need to fight again, for she recieves a handsome 500 gold a day, and lives in a beautiful estate outside of town. She has no lands other than this, but her close friendship with the Count still makes her recieve much higher respect than any ordinary knight. She met Bal in a tavern, and overheard him debating with a visiting sage on the matter of chivalry. Being a knight and a warrior, she joined in the debate, and the two continued talking long after the sage left. They arranged to meet up again, and soon spoke of family and life as well as more intellectual topics. The two are currently lovers, having been very close for a long time, and Bal trusts Yarraa implicitly. Yarra, on the other hand has seen both the good in Balmoloch, and the evil, in the form of his revenge. She fears what may become of the world if he does become a ruler, but she knows that he is also charitable and kind, and is willing to take a chance. She currently is negotiating with her Count, to see if she can have him Knighted - this would contribute hugely to his goals, if she were successful, but the Count is reticent to make a man he has never met one of his closest and most trusted servitors.

Reflections on your mother

When she died, I expected to feel more than I did… She raised me, more than my father ever did, she cared for me, she encouraged me, and yet, when she died, its was as if nothing had changed. What does that say about me? When I was little, I remember the oatmeal she used to make me on a morning - my father always thought she coddled me, but I guess he just wanted me to be tough. He knew that she always snuck a little extra honey in, made it a little bit sweeter. He never said anything, but he knew; he wasn't blind. My mother did a lot of things he didnt like. She dried my tears when I cried, and saved me a lot of fights by talking to the other boys mothers. Funny. In the end, it wasn't neccesary - I got bigger than any of them. A couple years back, a boy from down south tried to pick on me, but it wasn't me that ended up with a bloody nose and 2 less teeth. Maybe they both did what they could - she tried to make me a good man, and Dad made me a tough man. But she never did tell me where she got that tattoo on her upper arm. So strange, that tattoo. Like a silver serpent. She never talked about it, sometimes she refused to even admit it exists. I guess I'll never know everything about her, but all the same, I have to wonder where she got it… WHY she got it…

Finding a job

Jobs for a man of my.... Limited abilities is proving to be difficult. The only work I find is menial, and pays a dogs wages - how am I ever to find atonement? 135 gold the mystic asks, and at 3 gold for a days work, its just not enough. Half the time I don't even get full pay! The man walks up to me, says I didnt do good enoug, and leaves me with but 1 gold piece. Truly, it is a sorry state of affairs. But I must try. As it is, I am homeless, and once I pay the mystic ill be penniless. Im going to sell my armor in the morning. Ill keep my bow, of course - but I need to fix this. Maybe, if I give up enough to the gods, they will forgive me my sins, and will grant me some mercy. Only time will tell, as always. Although really, I don't lack in physical strength - I would expect that is wouldn't be so damned difficult to find a use for me! Even my little knight seem disinterested in me - she gives me some gold, takes me a little closer, but the way she looks at me - I can tell that she feels I've fallen very far from grace. Her charity is the only reason that I am anywhere NEAR my goals - my only skill is that I can make potato soup. And even that isn't good enough for the tavern, else I wouldn't be writing this. Ah, but they always told me life was unfair… had I only comprehended what they meant…

Message to Advisor

I've been having some difficulty in my missions - you see, my only skill was with a bow, and the creatures I have faced have slain me time and again. It will cost me dearly to free myself from the curse of the War Gods, but the mystic says the ritual WILL work - Im afraid that, if I want to escape this constant dread, and this cycle of suffering, I must sell my armor, and pay for her accursed ritual. If it is successful, I will be able to start anew - I won't be so weak, and so loathed. I can see the people, they look at me in my fine clothes with the curses of the war gods, and they know I am weak, and they hate me, for they think I scorn the gods. I must prove to them - and to myself - that this is not true. Your contibutions to my cause have, as always, been very helpful - if it were not for your help, my love, I fear I would be nothing. Once I have atoned, I will truly be free to pursue our mutual goal once again. I will be seeing you soon.
Yours - and yours alone,
Bal.
