The winged serpent banner is simply one of the more commonly known symbols of the Zhentarim. They often use such creatures as messengers.

Out of Character: level one exhaustion for each involved. In addition, each lost 6 levels worth of spells, this can be split up however you wish (For instance one each of level 1,2,and 3 spell slots would do it), an additional level of exhaustion can be taken in place of 2 spell levels.

After pulling Varram from the pool Velon suddenly gets dizzy, bends over and vomits on the floor. He falls to one knee and tries to gather himself, but struggles. His companions just see him kneeling and holding his head while staring at the floor and taking deep breaths.

Out of Character: . No spells slots left so rocketing straight to 4th level exhaustion.

He feels to nauseous to get up. He, lies down drained to exhausted to move, or think.
"I don't suppose there is anyone left guarding," Tazskan says wearily.

Out of Character: So it would be safe to say that he wouldn't have enough power to damage a fly at the moment. No spell slots, or available spells for him. Straight to 4th level exhaustion, and 25 hit points.
