"I'll leave you to question our friend, 'Achir' here further if you wish, Geoffroy. I have enough information for my purposes save for one last question regarding the explosive. Was it a signal to the outlying camps to attack? And if so, how soon?" After the man gives his answer, Sar'ai gathers her items and the book and proceeds to find an area either within the temple or the fort where she may get to work on her letter. Once such as place is found, she studies the mage Tyqon's spellbook, examining the subtle things that distinguish his writing from her own. Then, once the wizard feels confident that she can mimic his penmanship, she will tear a page out of Tyqon's spellbook and begin to write.
Out of Character: my next post will be the forged letter. Just need to know the role that the explosive played in all this.
Upon hearing Targul's report of the tunnel and its condition, Poljen recommends to Escobert that he leave a guard or two to watch it until the door can be resecured. "We will definitely explore it some point, but until then, we need someone to warn us if nasty beasts or enemies come through." He offers to take a shift watching the tunnel entrance overnight.
Out of Character: : Poljen has burned no limited abilities today, as far as I can recall. So taking a shift in the basement of that tower should not be too debilitating. If nothing happens, even better. Then he will get some sleep… unless it is decided to do a night scouting foray. Then he wants someone to come get him!
Once Sar'ai finishes the letter, she rolls it up. The half-drow then walks up to the closest tower of the fort and communicates to Elanna to "Take the rolled parchment in one of her talons and fly in the direction of where Poljen said to have seen the camp with the dragonborn and stormlizards. Once there, locate a humanoid who appears to be in charge and fly down to them, get their attention and drop the letter. Once the task is completed, come back."
With that the owl takes to the air almost becoming completely invisible against the night sky. Sar'ai looks on for only a few moments before finding an area to begin her meditation to rest, for even she isn't too confident that they'll see the next dawn before the threat is at the town's walls…
Forged Letter:
"Note, names will be avoided as there is now a slight chance of this message being intercepted and the threat of being identified would result in total failure of our mission here. But I thought it prudent to inform you of the situation that has developed within the town, as you no doubt have seen the signal and also may be aware of the dissipation of the 'barrier'.
Firstly, the signal was set off prematurely due to the incompetency of one of the men I have had placed under my leadership here. While I was in the process of completing the second stage of the plan, a group of apparent children found the signal flare that was not well enough hidden, and the insolent wretches set it off. This had the exact effect of calling attention to our little hideout by a curious bunch who have just come into town from the direction of Baldur's Gate. In a panic, the lackey I was referring to attacked the newcomers with the battle leading inside and during the scuffle, disrupted the completed circle, setting me back at least another day.
The skirmish was not a total loss as we managed to overcome them and have them held now as prisoners. However, there is a drow female among them who shows talent with the arcane and claims to have interrogated and killed that idiot, Linn, down at the camp which allowed their caravan to arrive here in the first place.
From what she claims, she is somewhat 'sympathetic' to our cause. She has already informed me of her group spotting the kobold encampment, and although I find her willingness to undermine her accomplices to be somewhat unusual, she did hand over the afore mentioned idiot's wand as a sort of 'proof' she is on 'our side'. Whether this is true or not, she is proving useful for now as she is allowing me to use her familiar, this owl, as a means to deliver this message to you. I will leave you to decide when her 'usefulness' has ended. But at the moment, the plan is delayed for at least another day or two at the most.
If you do not see another signal by the second day, assume we have been compromised.
For her glory,
-T"
The newly opened passage is dealt with simply enough. A few men shove the door back in the hole and push crates back in front of it. They've been tasked to keep watch, but Poljen is more than welcome to assist.
Elanna returns to Sar'ai soon enough. She reports that someone shot at her when she made herself obvious. But she evaded it, and did manage to drop the message at the feet of the man who seemed in charge.
Out of Character: It looks like most people are settling in for the night. Does anyone have anything else to do, or shall I hit the fast forward button?
Onwen glances outside and notices that the light is indeed beginning to fade, his eye twitches a little bit as he looks at his journal and then around the room feeling frustrated that there is more information here than he can document in the amount of time that he seems to have left. He jots down a few more hastily written notes and then leaves, making his way to the fort to meet up with the rest of the party.
Geoffroy thanks the man for his cooperation, and considers what seems to be the plan Sar'ai has come up with. Looking to the half drow he asks, "Well, should we call it a night then?" He hopes the plan does not backfire on them, especially since there could be details that tips them off something is not right with the forgery.
The cleric suspects that she will wait for Elanna to return, yet Geoffroy head off though not before asking those keeping watch to make sure Achir was kept comfortable so he could heal up. There was perhaps still use for him, as well more he wanted to learn about him.
Still, he needed rest and calling to Elyria saying, "Lets go Ely, it is time for us to rest." His faithful squire nods and they head to where they were staying the night for such, though time would be spent writing on the day.
The men who picked up the crystal from the shop deliver it to the fort shortly after nightfall. At Onthar's instructions, they'd placed it in a large lead lined chest one of the smiths threw together. With the lid closed, there's no hint of the faerzress.
The meeting continues on for a little longer, but then people disperse for the night, save those on watch. Everyone finds a berth easily enough, there are several barrack rooms in the fort, and they have all been opened for your use. Greenest's militia all have their own homes to go to.
The night passes by quietly enough, anyone who remains awake could easily forget what lies outside of the town's lights. A light fog gathers in the still air.
It isn't until early morning, only about an hour until first light, when someone first sees them. Men and beasts, marching through the night from the south, hundreds of them. The bulk of their number appear to be kobolds. Several groups of the taller humanoids were organized in lines, holding to a rope to stay together, they drop it as they enter the faint light shed from the lights on the curtain wall.
As alarm bells begin ringing across town, the bulk of the army appears to be heading for the eastern gate, but several light cavalry units are fanning out to the west as well.
Out of Character: and thus it finally begins. Yes, you all got a full long rest. The description of the army I gave was what Sar'ai and any who join her on the towers can see at the moment.
