Lawrance is ambivalent and will be stating in the thread about it, but Out of Character: I am totally in agreement with Velon about your primary task - getting the mask. If you have gone through all this trouble and loss, and end up loosing the mask due to greed, it'd be sad.
In the interest of furthering the discussion…
While staying presents significant risks, destroying or taking this place does have benefits other than simply potential loot. If the ultimate goal is destroying the cult, then taking Castle Skyreach out of their hands would be a major step towards weakening them.
It would be devastating to them. This is one of their supply lines to bring Tiamat back. The simplest way to make sure the mask is taken to safety is have Velon carry it. If it all goes wrong he has the scroll and the mask. Mission accomplished for us.
Yes I do think we can make some pretty good arguments for staying, even if it's a stretch in character for some.
Daishain, can you remind us of Silas's exact instructions. Was destroying the mask an option? I'm not sure if that is something that is easily done, however, or could be done here in the castle.
Edit: Oh man, I can't even imagine the ramifications if Velon and/or half the party or so was forced to teleport out to save the mission and the rest were left to fend for themselves or die. Talk about splitting the party! It could be campaign wrecking, and potentially very upsetting to several players. Let's avoid that *wink*.

Silas informed you that godly artifacts like the mask will eventually reform if someone manages to destroy it by conventional means, usually near those the artifact's creator would want to have them (Tiamat's servants in this case, exactly the people you're trying to get the thing away from).
He went on to mention that some of his peers had devised a method to destroy it permanently, but that the ritual required, among other things, blood from one of Tiamat's avatars, none of which have walked the world since her imprisonment. Hence, the mask remained protected in the vaults of metallic dragons for several centuries before being stolen.
So, destroying it might be a last ditch effort if given no other options, but it is likely to be at best a delaying tactic.

Oh, oh I know what the two females are! They are Dvati, twin race with a shared soul bound that one cannot live long without the other. It always seemed like an interesting concept for race, though I have yet to have the opportunity of playing as Dvati myself or see it played by another.
It would appear that is not quite fast enough to post before the Dungeon Master replied, I wanted to show that I knew what the race was before he actually said what they were.

Sorry to spoil that for you.
In any case, yes, I've always kind of wanted to try playing a Dvati character. But the mechanical rules behind them are so awkward no one I know wants to mess with them.
Ah well, I can still use a pair as a noncombatant NPC without having to worry about those details.
