Nice arcana check
The most telling weaknesses of a vampire are running water and sunlight, either rapidly destroy its form.
In the absence of those banes, it is mostly a matter of bypassing or wearing down its other defenses. The most obvious of these is rapid wound regeneration, holy water or radiant light can temporarily stem this effect however.
-They also take reduced physical damage from nonmagical sources, and reduced necrotic damage.
-They're known for simply shrugging off spells as well. Legendary Resistance means that for a limited number of times per day, the vampire can take a failed save and just straight up turn it into a passed save.
-Their last line of defense is an escape to recover. If slain, and they are not in running water or sunlight at the time, they revert to a cloud of mist that rapidly seeks out the vampire's resting place where it reforms in a suspended state. If the body is not found and destroyed within an hour, the vampire rises again.
Lora may end up being the key to this. We'll have to protect her in case the Dungeon Master-Vampire gets wise and goes for her. Alternatively everyone beating on her would probably outpace the healing factor quickly, but there's are too many enemies for that currently it seems.
Nikolaos can also do radiant damage with Sacred Flame or with Holy Water. But his priorities might be in keeping people alive for the time being.
He has two vials of holy water in his inventory. Hopefully next turn he can disengage his way into the dining room and hand them out as he goes. So that he can keep healing and eventually doing radiant damage to the vampire.
Daishain, there are a couple of people in between Lora and the vampire. Will she need to move to get line of sight to the vamp or can she cast from where she is for sacred flame? I would rather not have her exit the room unless necessary.
I think we are going to make this after all. Take these out, get a long rest and then down goes the dragon. This fight seems worry free after taking on the two Giants *wink*
.
Yeah you can't really argue when someone wants to heal the party!
Daishain I think Paul and Kyrroeth are taunting you. Just don't take it out on the rest of us *wink* I'll feel better about it if we can clean up some of these melee cultists soon and if the vampire doesn't start dropping someone every turn!
Bite your tongue! I am most assuredly NOT taunting Daishain. I simply observed that if the vampire is banished, the fight becomes much easier. I don't think anyone would dispute that. If, however, the banish does not work, this will get much more dicey. I think a lot depends on how many cultists we manage to remove this round and next.
It's all well and good for people to gripe about my dice rolling but Poljen can only do so much, since his attacks can only strike one target at a time. And I would like to point out a couple of things. First, non-combat rolls for Poljen easily span the range of randomness. Second, as a fighter-type, with 2 attacks per turn, and frequently rolling twice for each attack, I am bound to get more critical hits. I am thrilled I do not seem to have garnered more fumbles than average, though.
