Suffolk University Poll: Only half of Americans think Electoral College should choose president

As members of the Electoral College cast their ballots nationwide today, a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll finds just 50% of registered voters think the Electoral College makes sense. That includes three-fourths of Trump supporters. More than four in 10 Americans say the president should be chosen by popular vote. Ref. USAToday.

The main reason we have an electoral college system is because the founding fathers thought that the people were too stupid to know what they really wanted. They wanted a representative republic not a true republic. As such intermediaries were used to vote on behalf of people in whatever ways made sense. I think that since the country has been around for 140 years, we know more or less what we want and should have a direct republic, not a representative republic.

It is too late to change anything about this election, but I think we should change how our election system works and go for a true majority vote to decide the president, not a electoral college representative vote.

How do you know they aren't still too stupid to know what they really wanted, didn't they vote for Trump as a tell all of their stupidity?

That is true, but Hillary won the popular vote by over 4 million. That isn't insignificant out of 300 million (1.33% in Hillary's favor). People are stupid and they will make mistakes, there is no way to protect from it, but at least go with the popular mistake, not the mistake that a minority want (No matter how large that minority).
