The Basic Books For Reading?
Which books must be read to be well rounded so that you are considered a serious reader? For instance, can you be a well rounded reader without ever touching Shakespeare?
I say you can, but do feel having an appreciation and understanding of the classics does show a certain seriousness many lack. There are today many great and amazing stories that are more modern that can be enjoyed. Especially since so much has changed and now more then ever many classics are a difficult read.
Shakespeare being a notable example, many complaining the stories are difficult to understand and take in. More, times are different and relating to the struggles of the characters many not be something many can understand given how different our culture is.

I think the classic authors such as Shakespeare should still be read. There is a reason that his works are still revered hundreds of years later. There is a dumbing down in this country. We tend to gravitate to the lowest common denominator in so many things. I do understand the point about the language difficulty and times changing. There is definitely a place to read modern literature. It should be an important part of our education system and helping us to understand the world we live in. Reading classics like Shakespear stretch our minds. It is a challenge and really helps our vocabularies. Easy is not always best. I'm not saying that I sit around all day reading Shakespeare. I do feel that it is important to push our boundaries a little. Just my opinion.

No, an appreciation of literature is not dependent on what is read.
While there are tales that stand out, there are none that are required by any stretch. While I would recommend Shakespeare to anyone interested in classical European literature, there's no expectation.
Fair enough Daishain, and I can definitely agree. There are many genres and styles of writing or literature. Myself I am more one who enjoys that of adventure, fantasy, and mystery.
Still, for though who may be willing to give it a chance I would still recommend the works of Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, S.G. Wells, Edgar Allan Poe, and many more of the Classics author.
