Torture,Art Forced Information Extraction Is torture effective or a means for enemies to vent frustration. Can there be other types of torture that may be more effective than physical abuse?

Torture - The Art Of Forced Information Extraction

Do you think that torture is okay under these circumstances? The kind of torture I am referring to is to keep someone in a room and use various devices, tools, methods and pain to make them give information (Truth?). Sometimes if pushed too far it can lead to death, but torture is geared towards pain.

- To get info to solve a crime
- To find a bomb that will kill one person
- To find a bomb that will kill 10,000 people
- To stop hunger in a country.

*To get info to solve a crime

I don't think torturing someone will get any kind of information on a crime no matter how horrible the crime.  The person being tortured may just end up dying or something like that before they would reveal anything.

*To find a bomb that will kill one person

If the person that is being tortured is the person who set the bomb, this person may not want to tell anything.  No matter what kind of torture this person was to endure.  (i.e. a crazy terrorist)

*To find a bomb that will kill 10,000 people

I just don't know about this one.  Like if the person they are torturing is like one of those crazy terrorists, they wouldn't tell where the bomb would be.

*To stop hunger in a country

I don't see where torturing someone to stop hunger will solve anything.  But then again, I guess it would depend on if it was some kind of person in authority that is keeping the country without food.

No way, torture is wrong in whatever way we can think of. The person in this case may give you the wrong information or confess a crime they didn't commit just because they want the pain to stop.

Hm I don't know, all I know is thar  I don't believe like Machiavelli said once 'The ends justify the meanness ' sad.gif

Same thing as above

- To stop hunger in a country

First, I don't think torture is an effective tool.  Particularly if the victim of the torture is innocent. (Of course, I've never been tortured, or ever had to torture someone.)

Second, in order to administer torture, one would have to have a paid torturer -- and those people, in my opinion, enjoy their jobs too much.  That's pretty sick.  Think of the wackos you'd attract by advertising the job description: "Must be able to inflict pain and suffering on potentially innocent people."

Third, anyone sick enough to plant a bomb might enjoy torture.

Solve hunger?  That doesn't seem to be something that could be solved by torture.  How about teaching people to garden instead?

IMO
Roz.

I will probably shock you all with my opinion,  :o but I think torture is fine if it is being used to acquire information and not as punishment.

I believe, as a matter of fact, that it is known to work effectively when done by professionally trained people.  They do exist.

Not all torture is thumb screws and beatings.  Sleep deprivation is a very effective form of torture.

spock.gif Tenaheff, I hope we are never enemies and I am captured by you. I actually cannot begin to comprehend having as an occupation the tasks of making someone suffer / feel pain. Such people I am sure may have been the results of inflicted pain or abuse of some form?

I am not sure the torture I am talking would inflict "Pain" like beatings, but discomfort like lack of sleep and thirst and hunger.  This is a tactic I believe interrogators use.  I don't think they really call it torture, but I believe technically it is a form of it.

As for us being enemies, not to worry, I am al talk.  I couldn't hurt a flea.  Although, I did serve in the United States Marine Corps when I was younger. .

Yes, you well said you believe. I personally do not think they used lack of sleep or thirst or hunger with the suspects of terrorist attacks....they use other...hm how to put 'unconventional' methods of torture. sad.gif.
