What was the reason for Nazi Germany invading Russia? It seemed like the Nazis would have been better off taking the war to the UK and Africa before Russia.

Germany most definitely would have been better off beatin the U.K. Had they taken Africa they actually might have been able to invade the USSR through the Caucasus too. They invaded because Hitler wanted lebensraum. I believe that means living room. As in more room for the German people to live.
As added information, Germany was planning to invade England but the to crush the RAF first. When the Germans switched from bombing airfields to bombing cities they were weeks away from driving the RAF to northern airfield and complete control of the skies over the Channel.
As another point of information, Stalin was hoping Germany would get embroiled in an English invasion. He was rebuilding his army and his intent was to launch a sneak on the German troops in Poland around 1943. The Germans were ready two years earlier. Had they not had to bail the Italians out of their failed invasion is Greece they may have taken Moscow. The plan was to invade two months earlier than they did.
