Now this wounded soldier is being discharged from his company in Fort Hood, Texas, without enough gas money to get home. In fact, the Army says 27-year-old Spc. Robert Loria owes it close to $2,000, and confiscated his last paycheck.

These are extenuating circumstances. I don't know if he will get them resolved in his favor or not, but most military members separated do, in fact, get the money to return home. Every member of the military is paid travel pay to get from their final duty station to their home of record. This guy will probably also collect a disability check (small though it may be) for the rest of his life. The problem here is that the military over paid him. When that happens, you are just a number. There is no consideration for human cost at that point. You simply must pay back what is owed.
