Assuming we're talking about a grenade that just landed by your feet, running isn't usually an option, as the fragmentation range for a typical grenade is quite wide. Trying to throw/kick it away is usually just a great way to guarantee being on top of the explosion.

Best bet is to find cover of some kind. Something as simple as a sheet of plywood can help immensely, though if you're speaking of something movable, you're better off if it is angled to deflect rather than stop the explosion and associated shrapnel.

If no cover can be found at all, dive away into the ground. If possible angle your body so that your feet are between the rest of you and the grenade. This protects your head and torso while presenting a minimal profile.

Depending on which country produced it you have five to nine seconds to decide what to do. We used to dig trenches in our foxholes on one side and if a grenade came in we were taught to kick it in the trench. We dug em deep.

True life story, my first platoon sergeant I had after I became a squad leader was a great guy and a good leader. He became a good friend. He went the Airborne unit in Alaska and eventually took over their pre ranger training. One day they were doing live grenade training and one of his soldiers got scared and dropped the grenade after he pulled the pin. My buddy grabbed the guy first and threw him out of the hole they were trying in and then jumped out after him. He didn't make it and the grenade messed him up good… but it didn't kill him.

Grenades are not these nuclear, huge fire ball explosion things they show on TV and their shrapnel isn't evenly distributed. My buddy got a little shrapnel but the blast messed up his insides. He was medically retired but he's still around 30 years later.

If I have to worry about a grenade being tossed my way it means I have done something wrong. I took a wrong turn into a war zone. This is a very random question.

Carry a bat with you at all times so if you see a grenade coming at you, you can knock it back away like a home run *smile*

All seriousness grenades are dangerous but if you know about them and see them you can hopefully avoid them. Best thing is to be low and behind cover as Daishain stated. They are not usually real deadly unless you standing there looking at it.

If it just fell wouldn't picking it up and throwing it as far away from you as possible then prostrating on the ground be the best possible thing?

Kicking it is usually the better option. Picking it up takes a second or two away. If the Pearson who threw it cooked it off, which means held it for a few seconds before throwing it, then you don't have much time. Also, picking it up and throwing it means it's in the at about eye level. If it goes off in your hand or just a few feet away it's at its deadliest height. Picking it up looks great in Hollywood but it's not the real world.

Replying to: North, If you have the reflexes of a greased snake, catching and throwing it away might work. But if it lands first, you probably only have 1 or 2 seconds to react. Meaning if you take the time to pick it up, it is almost certainly going to detonate next to your head. You'd actually have a better chance of survival doing nothing at all than lifting it off the ground.
