There might be an issue, but if it came to court, I think they'd have to prove that you deliberately intended to cause harm with the redirect, which wouldn't be easy, especially if there were few other places it could go.

This is a little tangent from the question. How about the people that cover grenades with their bodies to save people around them? That kind of courage is just amazing. I can't imagine a more selfless act that that. Stories like that give me hope for us as humans.

Agreed, courage and honor like that is a rare and precious thing.
That kind of thing makes me wonder if materials tech has gotten where a large ballistic shield for a single member of a military squad might be worthwhile. Designed properly, among other things, falling on a grenade with one of those wouldn't likely be a sacrifice.

If a live grenade was thrown in my direction I would first make sure all the people around me were able to move quickly out of its way. IF they do not have enough time to get out of the way and I feel I do not have enough time to get them out of harms way or to get the grenade out of the area by kicking it in a safe direction then I would do what I could to protect those around me by Covering it up with myself. I am a big guy so I should be able to suppress the explosion from harming anyone else.
Yeah, this is an instant Medal of Honor… posthumously. It takes an incredible amount of courage to do something like this. If I were ever in this situation I would like to think I'd make the sacrifice, but in truth it's hard to know how one would react. I mean, I knew brave men who had faced danger over and over for years, and then one day they couldn't do it any longer. They'd be shaking like a leaf in the wind. So, one never knows for sure how one would react in a situation like this.
I will tell you about a friend of mine. SFC Dornhecker. He was my first Platoon Sergeant when I became an NCO. He taught me how to be a sergeant… or at least everything I hadn't learned yet. He was transferred to Alaska about 18 months after we met and took over the Ranger Candidate Training up in Alaska. One day, he was training a kid on the grenade range. They were in a foxhole, which is one of the stations to go through in grenade training. The kid pulled the pin on the grenade, got scared, froze for a second, and then dropped the grenade. Dorny kicked the grenade as far away as he could and picked the kid up and through him out of the hole. Then, he started to follow when the grandee went off. The hole muffled a lot of the explosion but his legs were still mostly in the hole. They were mangled up pretty good. He lived and the Army saved his legs, but he was medically retired. He is a hero and someone I hope I'd emulate if ever in a similar situation.
Wow. He is a true hero. He didn't think of himself at all.
OT: Stories like this are why I prefer military vets as politicians. They had to sacrifice at some level and think of others. Lawyers who make up most of our politicians on the other hand….

Yeah I know I have not been in a situation where I would be faced with a life decision but I do know I have had a good life and I would not be afraid to put my life on the line to help others live. Thus I know in my heart if I can not get people out of the way I would jump on a live grenade.
