Game theorists devise 'catch-up rule' to make sports contests more competitive, and exciting, to watch
A team of game theorists has devised a “Catch-Up Rule” that is designed to make sports such as volleyball, badminton, and squash more competitive—and more thrilling for spectators. Ref. Source 3a.
I disagree with this rule. I think the games are just fine the way they are. Why change it just to make a game closer. If the teams are close to being equal it will be a great game and go back and forth. If the teams are not all this rule is doing is making it harder for the better team to win and prolonging the suffering of the other team. I can only see gamblers enjoying this rule as a way to make money easier on the underdog.
Actually, I have to say, this sounds excellent. The sports they're speaking of give the serve to the person who last scored. With skilled players, having the serve is a huge advantage. So score once, and you have the chance to build up a crushing string of points, even if your opponent is just as skilled.
That is just it you can not score a crushing string of points because once you are in the lead the serve will go to the team that is behind again. I can see this being a bad thing and prolonging games to the point it is no fun anymore for the players. I find it needless and a waste of time in my book.
