I don't know how I feel about this. It is horrible about the botched surgeries. I really feel for the patients. Getting life in prison seems a little extreme to me. Even going to prison for a physician is surprising. These type of things are usually handled by lawsuits and malpractice insurance. If all doctors were scrutinized like this I'm sure there would be many others that could be sent to prison. What justifies sending a surgeon to prison? How many botched surgeries? One? Two? Three? He didn't willfully harm these people. He got sentenced harsher than most rapists, many murderers and drunk drivers that kill people in collisions. What about the places that hired him? Apparently they thought his work was satisfactory. Are they not culpable?
It is sad that a doctor is sentenced harsher than a drunk driver a killer or a serial rapist. I can see doctors not wanting to do any more surgeries for fear of prison. Where will that leave the rest of the people who can no longer get the surgeries they need. OR maybe the amount of paperwork will increase ten fold to make sure you will not sue or take them to court.
